I’m very excited to bring to life a revamped photo viewer! There are some significant upgrades here that are worth some discussion.
To start, the antiquated, slow, and manual ingestion process of photos has been completely scrapped. For each trip, I had to redundantly create an article, name the photos, and give them each a caption. Of course, this is after I have spent some time editing these photos to my liking.
Thus, in addition to editing these photos, I had to do the chore of preparing them for upload. No longer! In this site, I use the EXIF data that already embedded in the system of most modern cameras (and certainly all of the ones that I use).
By leveraging the existing EXIF data, I can automate a lot of work to sort the images. A much intended side effect of this is that I can graph each photo on the map.
With this new dimension (space), it’s very easy to see where each photo was taken, which is a question that a lot of people have asked me for any given photo.
It was really interesting to tinker with the EXIF data formats to create this backend, as I had never dealt with EXIF data in a programmatic setting before.
So, I can now demonstrate my photos in space, but what about time? That is where the year selector comes in. Again, I was able to use the EXIF data to find when each of the photos was taken, and filter based on that.
With this new application, I can graph my photos across time and space. Now, I will focus much more on the editing of my photos rather than managerial work.
Check out those photos!
